This is Also Motherhood is a new exhibition from the Maternal Mental Health Alliance (MMHA) and award-winning artist Carolyn Mendelsohn, reflecting the diverse realities of mental health before, during and after pregnancy through portrait and still life photography, intimate audio interviews, and the written word.
We are pleased to be able to share the This is Also Motherhood film, which showcases the exhibition and the stories of our 10 contributors.
10 amazing women and mothers, sharing 10 stories about the lesser-known and talked-about side of pregnancy, parenting and perinatal mental health.
Complex fertility and antenatal anxiety
Perinatal eating disorders
Postpartum psychosis
Birth trauma, birth injury and PTSD
Hyperemesis gravidarum (severe pregnancy sickness)
Neurodiversity and perinatal mental health
Queer motherhood and mental health
Perinatal OCD and intrusive thoughts
Young motherhood and suicidality
Baby loss, bereavement and grief
We are deeply grateful to the women who took part in this project. Their openness and honesty have been truly inspiring, and we hope they feel proud of the role they’ve played in opening up conversations about perinatal mental health. Thanks to them, more parents will know they are not alone.
The exhibition is just the beginning. This is Also Motherhood will continue online, in print, and through the voices of parents. Together, we hope to build a more realistic, compassionate understanding of what it really means to become a parent.
We'd love to tour the exhibition. If you have a space and a gap in your schedule, please contact comms@maternalmentalhealthalliance.org.
