Wednesday 1st May is World Maternal Mental Health Day; a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of the mental health needs of new and expectant mothers here in the UK!
With an election due later this year, the Maternal Mental Health Alliance (MMHA) is asking the general public, healthcare professionals and member organisations to come together to educate parliamentarians about maternal mental health in the UK and ask them to show their commitment to improving care.
Mental health problems are the most common complication of pregnancy and the postnatal period (affecting 1 in 5 women and birthing people). Yet, there is far less investment and attention compared to physical conditions like gestational diabetes (1 in 20) and pre-eclampsia (1-5 in 100).
We want mental health check-ins to be as standard as taking blood pressure, which is why we're asking MPs to ensure it's discussed sensitively at every antenatal and postnatal appointment.

It's crucial that we work together to make sure the mental health needs of new and expectant mothers and their families is on the political agenda.
