Mental Health Foundation has launched a new set of resources as part of their Creating Connections project. The Department for Health and Social Care-funded project aims to raise awareness of the specific barriers young mums face, the impact this has on their mental health, and highlight the importance of peer support in addition to statutory care.

With an increase in the number of teenage maternal suicides in recent years, understanding the mental health needs of young mums is more important than ever. As a Creating Connections partner, the Maternal Mental Health Alliance (MMHA) has helped the Foundation create a suite of materials aimed at improving this understanding.

The resources have been developed for professionals who work with or on behalf of young mums and are designed to increase their awareness of the additional barriers they face. Tailored information and guidance are now available for the following audiences:

  1. Voluntary Community and Social Enterprises (VCSE)
  2. Service providers
  3. Commissioners
  4. Policy makers

In addition, Mental Health Foundation has produced resources highlighting how to provide effective peer support. View their resources here.
